Importance of Vitamins and Minerals for Health

Food is energy. Food is also seen as medicine.  We feel well and energetic only if we are healthy. And we take medicine when we are not healthy. Even the Hippocrates, being considered the father of the modern or western medicine, is reported to have propounded Food as Medicine. He is believed to have always propagated the message that eating wholesome food is the basis for good health.

What is this wholesome food? There are macro elements- carbohydrates, proteins, fats. Then there are micronutrients. They are micro only in terms of quantity and not at all in terms of quality. They play very essential role in terms of upholding our health. They perform multitude of functions, playing a macro role in our health. They help in converting food into energy and also help in repairing cellular damage and sustain life and human body.

Every day skin is replaced and muscle recovered. They help to strengthen bones, heal wounds and boost the immune system for the young to grow, for the elderly to sustain and the old to carry on. Some minerals help in carrying all the chemical messages in the body to comprehend situations and sustain life. Most of these vitamins & minerals which are so fundamental for life are not manufactured in human body and have to be taken in the form of food or medicines.

It may be no exaggeration, if we say that that most medicines that people take in terms of quantity these days are vitamin and mineral supplements. This is what Hippocrates might have meant when he said- “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”

Most elderly, who can afford costs, take calcium supplements, a mineral for strong bones to prevent fractures in the old age. In fact for healthy baby mother needs to take folic acid for sufficient supply of iron. Magnesium, Phosphorous, Potassium, Sodium and Sulfur are some other important minerals that are compulsive and are to be in right proportions in a human body for a healthy life. Sodium, Potassium and Sulfur help us in maintain proper balance of water in the body. Calcium, Phosphorous and Magnesium are important for healthy bone the mainframe of the human body. Sulfur helps us to stabilize protein structures including those in the hair, skin and nails. Sodium helps in neural signaling.

Some of these minerals, which are essentially needed for sustenance of life, but are needed only in small amounts for human body are called trace minerals. These are inorganic and are available in abundance in the non living world like- Chromium, Copper, Fluoride, Iodine, Iron, Manganese, Molybdenum, Selenium, Zinc etc,. But some of these minerals get excreted from the body and are to be replenished. Iron carries oxygen in the body. Other elements help in similar crucial roles for the sustenance of life. They need to be in right proportions and excess presence of these minerals also could cause problems.

Unlike minerals, vitamins are organic that is they are extracted from living matter or sometimes synthesized. There are various vitamins like A, B, C, D.  Again there are different kinds of vitamin BĂ  like B1, B2. B12 and are created. They are not only helpful for proper vision, healthy gums but even for very fundamental requirements like production and release of energy. While vitamins like Thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, panthothenic acid and biotin help in energy production while several B vitamins form key components some coenzymes that play a role in release of energy. Vitamins like B6 and B12 help in cells to multiply and life to be sustained.

Undisputedly, Vitamins and minerals are essential for us to live well. So, let us have them-vitamins and minerals, as required to be active and productive for life.

Vitamins and minerals are essentialĂ  They make us live well. They are not only required to be active and productive but for the life to be sustained. While some vitamins help in energy production others also play a role in release of energy. Some minerals and vitamins also help in repair and replenishing of cells. So let us take them.

Food is seen as medicineĂ  We take medicine, when needed while the food is taken all the while. But we need certain very essential elements which we may not get if we do not eat wholesome food. While we always eat, we do not care to see if it is wholesome. Our bodies also need these elements differently at different ages and depending. So let us eat wholesome or when required take food supplements- that is vitamin and mineral consisting medicines.

Precautions For Dengue Fever

Dengue is one of the dangerous diseases found in our country and it could be fatal if not treated properly under proper medical supervision. Dengue is a viral infectious disease transmitted by the bite of an infected female Aedes mosquito. It is a tropical disease and is found in tropical and sub tropical locations as the weather and other factors are favorable for the breeding of such viruses. This critical disease is caused by Dengue virus and due to its exhaustive effects on the patient’s body, many a times it is also referred as the Breakbone disease. This dengue virus and the related disease can affect any person from any age group but it is more dangerous for the ones with weak immune system, as this dengue virus first and the foremost attacks its prey’s immune system. Thus the fever caused by this virus is termed as the Dengue fever.

This disease was first ever discovered in the mid eighteenth century in Philippines. In the severe conditions the Dengue fever turns into Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever, which is alarming as well as deadly. The disease cannot be detected without proper medical tests and medical consultations as the symptoms are not very unique and are more like any other viral infections. Some of the prominent symptoms of this disease are nausea, vomiting, rash, generalized pains, low white blood cell count, positive Tourniquet test, low platelets and metabolic acidosis, headache, lower backache, painful pain in the legs and joints, high body temperature, reddening of eyes etc.The Dengue virus not just effects the immune system of the infected person but also tries to wreck every other human system of the body so that patient could feel more weak and get vulnerable easily.

Although, till date there is no approved vaccination for this disease but there are various prevention methods which will surely help to reduce the outbreak of Dengue viruses. First and foremost is the eradication of the carriers of the virus that is the Aedes mosquitoes, and it could be done by destroying the breeding locations of such mosquitoes. It could be easily done by preventing water from stagnation in the open areas and other road side locations, emptying containers with suspected stagnant water or we could add insecticides and other biological chemicals and controlling agents to limit their growth and hence making the home and the surroundings free from mosquito breeds.

The public should be properly informed about this disease and the harms and dangers related to it. A clean society will not just keep you safe from such diseases but will also give a positive vibe for a happy and healthy life. During such illnesses you should take care of your eating habits. Better have foods which are easy on your digestive system that means foods which you could digest easily, intake of a lot of liquid products is necessary as it will help you to rejuvenate easily, for this you could have fresh fruit juices, soups and coconut water.

Like already said this disease has common symptoms like any other viral disease and hence it becomes more unpredictable and dangerous; so for a faster recovery you need to concentrate on some simple yet life saving steps. Take proper medication, give your weak body full rest, and have a balanced eating habit, and yeah, keep a positive attitude towards life.

Health Benefits of Cucumber

Health Benefits of Cucumber

The flesh of cucumbers is primarily composed of water but also contains ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and caffeic acid, both of which help soothe skin irritations and reduce swelling. Cucumbers’hard skin is rich in fiber and contains a variety of beneficial minerals including silica, potassium and magnesium.

A Radiant Complexion

The silica in cucumber is an essential component of healthy connective tissue, which includes intracellular cement, muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and bone. Cucumber juice is often recommended as a source of silicon to improve the complexion and health of the skin, plus cucumber’s high water content makes it naturally hydrating–a must for glowing skin. Cucumbers are also used topically for various types of skin problems, including swelling under the eyes and sunburn. Two compounds in cucumbers, ascorbic acid and caffeic acid, prevent water retention, which may explain why cucumbers applied topically are often helpful for swollen eyes, burns and dermatitis.

An Easy Way to Increase Your Consumption of Both Fiber and Water

Trying to get adequate dietary fiber on a daily basis is a challenge for many Americans. Adding a crunchy cool cucumber to your salads is an especially good way to increase your fiber intake because cucumber comes naturally prepackaged with the extra fluid you need when consuming more fiber. Plus, you get the added bonus of vitamin C, silica, potassium and magnesium.

High Blood Pressure? Cucumber Can Help You Cool Down

When people who participated in the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) Study added foods high in potassium, magnesium and fiber, their blood pressure dropped to healthier levels. Those people in the study who ate a diet rich in these compounds in addition to the other foods on this diet (low fat dairy foods, seafood, lean meat and poultry) lowered their blood pressure by 5.5 points (systolic) over 3.0 points (diastolic).

  • One of ginger's most touted health benefits is its ameliorating effects on digestive ailments. It can help digest fatty foods and break down proteins. It is excellent for reducing gas. Many people report that it will also relieve nausea, and can be effective in treating morning sickness as well as motion sickness.

How To Whiten Your Teeth With Banana Peel

Teeth Whitening Toothpaste

  • Brush your teeth as usual with a natural toothpaste or you can use the banana peel first and then brush. Use a ripe banana as it has the most potassium content in it. Peel from the bottom end as this is how monkeys peel their bananas and it will keep you from having all those loose threads.
  • Take a piece of the inside of the banana peel and gently rub around on your teeth for about 2 minutes. The amazing minerals in the peel like potassium, magnesium and manganese absorb into your teeth and whiten them.
  • Repeat the same procedure at night or before bedtime, to whiten teeth. Leaving the banana peel on longer is optional if you have stains that need to come off.
  • Do the banana peel routine twice daily to see teeth whiten.
